*warning* LONG ol' post here... :0)
things are finally getting back to normal...
i decided we needed new flooring in our bedroom and kitchen if you recall...
yes, i decided this a week before the fourth of july....
yes, i decided this right in the middle of hay season...
yes, when i decide it is all i can think about...
yes, i become obsessed...
but really i think i had a good reason for wanting a change...
this is a before shot of our bedroom flooring...
but i'm still going with the story that vacuum cleaners have yet to reach us here on the prairie...you know there are some advantages to living in the middle of nowhere... ;0)
and i do know i need a bedskirt...it has been on my sewing list for years now...one day right?!?
anyways...red carpet all the rage awhile ago...
not so much now...
so we ripped it out...
and discovered...
gorgeous pine flooring first installed in 1890...
now i know i probably shouldn't have but i did...
paint them...
cotton bloom...
*sigh*
now truth be told i hated our kitchen flooring...
i just had to have pergo years ago...
and i'm sorry but it was SO not a good floor to have in our house...
my kids were constantly slipping and sliding around and it was just...ugh...
once i saw what lori's friend did here...i just had to try..
so off to home depot we went...
we bought the cheapest plywood...
lauan is 11.00 for a 4 by 8 foot sheet...and it's waterproof...
we then cut the sheets into a little less than 8" strips..
and started liquid nailing down...
primed and painted the same warm white Cotton Bloom...
the end result...
all for around $50.00...
can't beat the price right?!?..
now for my prairie girl pros and cons...
*love* the feel of the floor, way better than pergo...
*super* easy to install...
~shows every boot and muddy footprint the wild prairie kids can track through it...but cleans up very easily...
~probably wouldn't put a small space between each board again...i'm sure you'd still get the definition between each plank without it...
~would i put this in a house that i planned on spending the rest of my life...hhhmmm...not so sure...
oh wait i just did...it has prompted some new ideas...big ideas...for our little prairie home...
will it be staying...probably not...
this prairie girl's heart still belongs to reclaimed barnwood flooring...
so what do you think?
~*prairie girl did a good thing...
~*prairie girl should be shot for painting over original pine flooring...
~*prairie girl should maybe try her ideas on something else namely the chicken coop or dog house where they won't be noticed...
~*prairie girl should just...well do something SO different...
{oh, i did a little shopping at the farm store today...a little something some of you farm girls might just like...and no it's not a wheelbarrow...giveaway coming soon so choose your options wisely ;0) }

Oh, the bedroom is divine, yes, you did good to paint it. The kitchen is just what I need for my studio in my shop. BEAUTIFUL :)
I think it looks great. Too bad it shows everything. Oh well the price of beauty.
Perfect! Love the color... wood was made to be painted. I paint oak pieces all the time and have not been arrested yet.
See you soon :)
Sue
Looks pretty great to me...and all that REALLY matters is that you LOVE IT! :-) Would love to see that prarie sometime!
Tammy :-)
WOW!!! Huge improvement. Love that you went with painting the floors. Gorgeous!!
Oh, I love how brave you are and how you just jump in with both feet and do it! I need to hang out with you and have you rub off on me. So, I think "Prairie girl did a good thing..." If it felt right at the time, good for you!
Im thinking that if you like it what diff what others think. Personally I'm about to try it on my little bunkhouse sun porch. Right after I paint the ceiling pale blue, and my ol oak rocker white. Have fall'n in love with a white(courtsey Barnhouse) called Greek Villa. Love to paint, it's cheap, like drop cloth curtains.
LOVE the painted floors and that metal cart on rollers is so cool!
~ Jo :)
Love it! Think you did a great thing. I am wanting to do the same type of flooring but I was wondering about how the floor would do in a kitchen with water/liquids if they got spilled. We have four children and I am wondering what you think about that stuff getting in those cracks?
Sarah
Wowzers... I can't believe how wonderful those floors look! Great job and I think painting over old wood floors is just fine. The look is so calming, and it is probably way more economical than refinishing them:). Love your style:).

love, love, love it.
we did a make your own hardwood plank floor in our kitchen...it's stained dark...the little spaces that just happened in between because the wood isn't perfect are a pain in the arse. i swear every drop of milk gravitates towards a crack. but you know what? i love em! they are getting all sorts of character through the years. i've been wanting to try that cutting the big piece of wood down to strips for the walls and ceiling. does it really look like planks? it's on my someday ~sigh~ list of honey do's.;D
that red carpet was pretty hot back in the day...i totally remember that stuff!
Well done to you. The floors look fabulous. That red carpet though...oh the memories...and usually accompanied with the old vinyl chairs and retro 70's wallpaper...well that's the look in Australia anyway. You've certainly tapped into your inner shabby chic though - looks great.
i'm so impressed
it looks fabulous kristin!!
I love how your floors turned out! So dreamy!!
THIS LOOKS GREAT! I love, love, love the kitchen floor.....I appreciate you telling all the pros and cons too. I'm serious-it is just dreamy. The bedroom looks fantastic too-you did a great thing painting over the wood. It makes things look so fresh.I'm going to have to get my husband to read this post and I think we're going to have to talk! Thanks for sharing.
I'm liking it ALL ...especially how my littles piggies feel on the wood floor ... my porch floor thrills me like this.
I love em!
We had to (re)paint our original pine subfloors upstairs in our farmhouse. They had been painted in the past. I wanted white, but hubby won with dark brown. Yuck. And we're still doing all kinds of construction, so the dark brown shows all the drywall and plaster dust. Double yuck. Should have went with white. :)
My son's floor is barn red, painted, and I LOVE that room. It is perfect for a 2 year old!!!
Anyway, I came by to thank you for your kind comments on my turkeys. I really appreciate it.
And vacuum cleaners haven't found their way to this part of the country, either. :)
When I saw the plywood flooring before, I was trying to think how I could get that in my apartment. But, I'm not so sure about painting over real wood floors. But, I guess you can always sand them later. :)
I will be waiting to see what you have for the farm girls!
Oh, if you need to try out some more ideas before you try them in your place, my place is ready and waiting!
Looks great Kristin!! well I dunno I kinda liked the red carpet! :) I hear you though on your love of reclaimed barnwood flooring I don't think there is anything better then that, but I do love the color you choose and the bedroom looks divine!! love the rolling cart...my punk would have a field day with that cart if I let him! xoxo
A M A Z I N G!!!!!!!!! You did gooooood Kristin! Am inspired, again by your style!
Hugs, angie =) xo
I love that you painted them! I'm not sure I could have done it - but now seeing you do it - maybe! I just would feel guilty, but they look GREAT! I LOVE it! Thanks for sharing! ;) Simply gorgeous! Bet you love your bedroom now! And I love the wide planks in the kitchen. ;)
Your floors ROCK! Love the white floor with the black iron bed. A few years ago, we put in satillo tile, thinking that it wouldn't show any traces of "kids", we were wrong...I still have to sweep and mop and scrub off marks. What's a girl to do? Hugs...
Yea! You finally convinced your mil to get rid of the red carpet?! It looks FABULOUS! I'm a little jealous right now....I'm so happy for you that you took the jump because now you have the perfect prairie house! The color is perfect, the spaces are charming and the color is beautiful. I love how the iron bed looks against the floors, like the olden days ~
You must be sooooo happy! :)
I've stared at these pictures now for about an hour and can't wait for my husband to get home - we just ripped up the carpet in our bedrooms and the floors are in very bad shape...maybe this will convince him that painted wood is the only way to go! :)
I LOVE IT!!!! and if it is like mine, the dirt will settle in between the planks and look like "grout" if you try to imagine it! easy to clean is a good thing - our 2 boys and dogs keep me busy with a once a day mop down.
It does look beautiful
I wish I could "unwrap" our carpet floors in our bedrooms and be surprised with the gift of hardwood! Lucky gal :)
I adore the painted floors! However, if I had done what you did, my husband would shoot me. He might let me get away with the kitchen plywood floors being painted....then laughed his butt off everytime I was on my knees washing all the dirt off the white!
I love the dark (i saw your dark pine cabinet!) and light contrast in the kitchen.
Good job girlie :D
XOX
My heart skipped a beat when I saw the amazing white floor in the bedroom...it looks so, nostalgic!
Oh I think they both look awesome! Makes me hate my ugly linoleum.
The floors look great! I probably wouldn't have the heart to paint the wood floors, but they look awesome! Let us know how the painted luan holds up!
love the floors, love the laundry basket...love it all....
Your floors look wonderful. I know what you mean about the light floor showing every spec of dirt, I have a very light tile throughout my house, and with two kids, a four year old chocolate lab (who thinks he is a small puppy), two cats, and four adults, my floor shows everything, but I like the light and airyness (sp) of it. Anyway I think you made great decisions. Thanks for sharing.
Jeanette
Prairie Girl did an EXCELLENT thing! And this girl is lifting that kitchen floor idea and using it in her own house! Thanks so much, great post :)
I think it just looks fantastic!!! Really great!!! And that cart is fabulous...I noticed how much I loved that too:)
I don't think you are crazy for painting it white...it can always be cleaned...although that isn't the best part...it looks wonderful though:)
Honey
I LOVE it!!!!!!!! You did Good. I love anything painted(except My sheets).

I think you did a fabulous job. I love the painted floors and think it was the right thing to do. You always have amazing idea's and a great vision of a space.

go check out my no sew curtains, now you have inspired me to figure out a "no sew" bed skirt.

Love your floors, they look gorgeous painted white! Just want you to know I think your blog is wonderful and I'm so glad I found it!
Take care
Kristin
Just thought I would drop back by and let you know that we are also taking the plunge and going with hardwood floors only ours will be stained. Do you have any advice? What did you do to seal your floors?
We will be starting in about two weeks!
Hi Kristin! Yup. The Prairie Girl did the right thing! lol! LOVE your floors. I would have my entire house painted that soft white if hubby would allow it.....and the 'discussion' continues...but that's another story. :) But yay for you for taking the plunge! It's got to be worth a little extra cleaning up, isn't it? Just beeeeautiful!
xoxo laurie@heavens-walk
Girl - that is BRILLIANT ! I am so gonna show this to my husband and see if I can "fix" my kitchen floor.
Love your blog.

I think the painted floors are pretty BUT..
I love love the original color of the wood..
Don't hate me! Don't get me wrong, it looks really really good.. but for me, I would have kept the natural color of the wood and purchased a rug.. but then the rug would get dirty... hummm, what do I know??
We have taken the plunge and you can find our adventure over at my page. I am loving the look so far of using plywood as my flooring!
Sarah
I think you did a great thing painting the wood floor! That's the beauty of wood. If you change your mind later, you can always sand it down and start over. But I don't know if you will want to do that. The white is beautiful!
That plywood flooring is so COOL! I never would have thought to do that! That would look good on the walls, too. Hmmmm. :)
